India has tremendous energy needs and ...

India has tremendous energy needs and an increasing difficulty in meeting those needs through traditional means of power generation. For economic as well as environmental reasons India needs to shift to non-polluting renewable sources of energy to meet future demand for electricity.

Renewable Energy Potential As on 15th April 2013

Solar Power - 100000MW, Wind Power - 100000MW, Small Hydro Power (up to 25 MW) - 20000MW

Solar energy sector promises to grow fast in India

Backed by a government subsidy and abundant availability, the solar energy sector promises to grow fast in India.

Wind Energy – Across The World

In the future wind power is expected to contribute the largest portion of renewable energy, other sources such as solar power are likely going to represent only a minor fraction of energy provided by wind power.

Clean Green Renewable Energy

Green energy sources, such as solar power, hydropower and wind power are not only renewable, but they are also low- or non-polluting. Their supplies are essentially infinite (at least during the lifespan of Earth and its Sun).

India to build world's largest solar power plant in Rajasthan

ET Bureau Sep 21, 2013, 11.06AM IST

India will build the world's largest solar plant to generate 4,000 mw from sunlight near the Sambhar lake in Rajasthan that will sell electricity at an estimated rate of Rs 5.50 per unit.

The first phase of the project, which would be 1,000 mw is expected to be commissioned in 2016. "Based on the experience gained during implementation of the first phase of project, the remaining capacity would be implemented through a variety of models," it said. The project would 23,000 acre of land out of which 18,000 acre would be provided by Hindustan Salts limited. The tariff is expected to be competitive.

The current cost of solar power in the country is around Rs 7 per unit. With the project setting the benchmark cost Rs 5.50 per unit, it is expected to bring down the cost of solar power further.

"Solar power at the rate of Rs 5.50 per unit would surely bring in buyers. Prior discussion with the government, distribution companies and ministry of finance have yielded that solar power at this rate is most viable for finance and purchase,

Solar power to trim govt’s electricity bills

The Telegraph |  Friday , September 13 , 2013

Bhubaneswar, Sept. 12: All government buildings in the twin cities will be fitted with solar panels on the their rooftops by June next year to generate renewable energy.

The state government has already floated a company called Odisha Green Energy Development Corporation, a 100 per cent subsidiary of Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Limited, for this purpose.

Managing director of the hydro power corporation Sahdev Khatua said: “We inked an MoU with the International Finance Corporation, a World Bank subsidiary, earlier this month to get technical support to carry out the project.”

Khatua said the project would be developed on a public-private partnership mode and on-grid solar power would be produced. “Earlier, in case of a rooftop solar panel generating power, the entire electricity produced had to be consumed by that building. With modern technology, the power produced from a rooftop can be transmitted to other buildings through a grid. It can be connected to the existing main power line,” he said.

The government is planning to generate at least 5MW power from the rooftops in the two cities. “With 5MW of power, the government buildings in the two cities can cut their power bill by Rs 4 crore,” he said.
The twin cities consume approximately 7.07 million units of electricity a day and the government buildings consume 19 million units a month.

“The hydro power corporation will invest Rs 45 crore on the project to get it started,” Khatua said.
A hydro power corporation official said any individual could install solar power panels by spending a small amount of money. “For one kilowatt of power, one has to spend only about Rs 90,000. If one goes for solar power, it will have no adverse impact on the building,” the official said.

Now AC coaches on solar power

The Times of India | TNN | Aug 5, 2013, 01.27AM IST

This is the first time the railways is attempting to tap solar power. Being the world's biggest railway system, it plans to use innovative technology to tap alternative sources of energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuel and the power grid. The railways sees a huge demand for air conditioned coaches in the coming years. And this demand could lead to increased spending on diesel to power the coaches. In other countries, too, it is rare to use solar power on trains.

Renewable energy

Renewable energy is becoming more and more prevalent around the world, but it is still not the dominant energy resource.
The primary 6 types of renewable energy are solar, wind, biomass, hydro power, geothermal and biofuels.  Each of these renewable energy sources provides an alternative to traditional energy generation and can be reproduced, reducing our footprint on the environment.
With so much dependency placed upon our natural resources to produce our much needed energy, scientists have been evaluating and producing renewable energy as an alternative to traditional energy sources.  Renewable energy is energy that can be reproduced in a short period of time.  The most prevalent forms of renewable energy are solar, wind, biomass, hydro power, geothermal and biofuels.
